The MD/PhD – MSc Program in Zurich is a part of the Swiss interuniversity MD/PhD Program that was created in 1992 by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) and a group of private research foundations. The Swiss national program initiated the first dual degree program in Europe and followed the successful concept of combined medical and scientific training programs initiated in the early 1960s in the USA. The program is run by all Swiss Universities with Medical Faculties in the Swiss national program, namely Basel, Berne, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich.
The MD/PhD – MSc Program supports research orientated physicians, dentists and veterinarians with outstanding credentials and potential who are motivated to undertake a second university course, leading to a MSc or PhD at a faculty of natural science. Students of the national program, Swiss and internationals, participate in the local programs of graduate training in the biomedical science offered through medical schools and the faculties of natural science.
Comparing the number of applications, the highest number of supported candidates originates from the University of Zurich, followed by the University of Lausanne, Basel, Geneva and Berne.
